To decide what items to keep and what to get rid of, you need to know the cost of owning the item. You also need to have an accurate idea of the value of the item. It is just as easy to have the wrong idea about value as it is to have the wrong idea about cost. At the same time that we tend to minimize the cost of owning something, we tend to exaggerate the value of having it.

The tab is a control character specifically designated to separate fields. A file that uses the tab as a delimiter is a tab-delimited file. It is natural to use the tab as a delimiter; the tab is invisible, so no data value would contain a tab. Invisibility can also be a disadvantage. Tab-delimited data is harder to view and edit. When a visible delimiter is needed, the usual choice is the comma. The most common type of comma-delimited file is a comma separated values (CSV) file.
